Back to Graphic Art
In September of 2024, I was assigned the task of designing a two-sided scavenger hunt minigame postcard for Prince George's County Festival of Lights and their new set of reindeer display lights. Because the festival would be a drive-through event where visitors could view the lights from their cars, staff wanted to introduce materials with which children could interact. I was given the document below as a reference for imagery.
Instead of directly incorporating the provided photos, I decided to take an illustrative approach to the project and make graphics for each of the reindeer display stands. I experimented with different graphic styles and—with input from team members—decided on one that more heavily emphasized line art.
I also received feedback regarding colors. While I initially was drawn to traditional "Christmas" colors like cozy reds and muted greens, staff instead wanted to emphasize the non-denominational winter holiday aspect of the festival and include bright blues. They also suggested Candyland as a reference point for the game layout. I used this feedback to introduce new colors into a gameboard staging of the reindeer graphics. The teals, I hoped, would serve to tie together the new blues and the existing greens in the reindeer; similarly, the pinks and reds in the gameboard would reflect the warm colors in the reindeer. The end result is a Candyland-esque path reflecting the order in which children could view reindeer lights in the park from their cars.
