arepo: a typeface by Sumner Stone is a monograph written, designed, and perfect bound by myself. The monograph details the history of the Arepo typeface and its creator, Sumner Stone, who played a key role in early Adobe typography as the graphics world was transitioning into the digital era.
While Arepo itself would not have been suitable for digital use at the time of early Adobe type development, Arepo itself reflects earlier efforts by Sumner Stone to translate older typefaces to the digital medium, and bears some resemblance to classic Garamond and Didone typefaces.
Due to the somewhat dignified character of Arepo, I decided to characterize my monograph with an abundance of white space, letting the type breathe rather than overwhelm. I also wanted to bring in some natural elements and imagery inspired by Sumner Stone's affinity for nature in all its forms. To this end, I studied the layout designs of Ikebana publications, attempting to replicate their sense of patience and space. Together, these attributes led me to approach the monograph with the intent to instill delicacy and quiet dynamism.
